Norman Foster’s firm has been announced the winner of the competition to design the King Salman International Airport in the Saudi Arabian capital. It is expected to be one of the biggest airports in the world, covering an area of approximately 57 square meters, including six parallel runways and the existing terminals named after King Khalid. It will also take in 12 square kilometers of residential and recreational amenities, retail outlets, and airport-support facilities. Designed to qualify for LEED Platinum certification, the airport aims to accommodate as many as 120 million travelers by 2030 and 185 million by 2050.
